Video Ringtones
Now, this is getting a bit too far - videos being played when someone calls. I’ve seen people let the phone ring sufficiently long enough for others to notice their audio ringtones. With video ringtones, it is only going to get worse. It may even lead to the phone not being answered, especially since Cell One is offering videos from D (Hindi), Sivakasi and a few sleazy ringtones from some...
Personalized Google
While checking mail at Gmail, I loitered around the site and saw that there were quite a few new features that Google had quietly made available. The biggest one was Gmail on mobile. Since GPRS on my phone will get activated only tomorrow, I will have to wait to see how it works. Among the other features, the one that caught my attention was the personalized Google page similar to Yahoo! and other...
Muniamma and Bhadrakaali
Now that the met department has started mimicking the US by giving names to cyclones, they could have as well given more regional names to them. Considering that the affected area would primarily be Tamil Nadu, Muniamma and Bhadrakaali would have been better names than Baaz and Fanoos. These sound more imperiling (“Aye Bhadrakaali varaa da!”) and people here would be able to relate to...
Hooked to Waris Shah
I have an ear for Punjabi folk from the time Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan lived. More recently, Rabbi Shergill’s Bulleh Shah has kept me enthralled for months. I also liked Kunal Ganjawala’s Channa Vey. Both very contrasting songs. These days I am hooked to Mekal Hassan Band’s (from across the border) Waris Shah. For those who follow Hindi/Punjabi literature/movies, Waris Shah...
The Dog and Pony Show and its aftermath
And they said that the lion’s roar was thunderous, his appearence was majestic and royal. The wait to watch him would be worth it and so on. After a long wait, much after the people involved in the Dog and Pony show had left, a large heavy looking cage arrived. Presently, the cage opened, out jumped a cat and ran away! Continuing the bashing of the way the Indian software firms operate, I...
Sushil's posts on the Indian IT industry
I just finished reading Sushil’s second post on the state of things in the Indian IT industry, the first one I had read yesterday. The two posts Battle Scarred Survivor of IT I & II are a must read for anyone working in the industry. Though they are long, they are definitely worth the time. There are several anecdotes present in them. One of them is very satirical - “Here’s a tip...
Cyclone Baaz buzz off
As I type my post, rain is beating down fiercely and there is the sound of thunder. Cyclone Baaz (or its weakened depression) is crossing or so we have been told by our Met department. It better cross soon and be done with it as the rains are making the entire city sick and crippled.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Short Review
I watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at Sathyam last Sunday. We (my cousins and aunt) started a little late and ended up missing over 15 minutes of the beginning. But thankfully, that did not affect in understanding the story. This time, the plot was to win a tournament that had groups coming from outside Hogwarts to participate. Harry is mysteriously nominated to compete in the...
