text 13 Feb Doha - A Business Traveler’s Perspective

I was in Doha, Qatar for a business presentation and my overall impression of the city was good. The city looked well-planned and there were mosques within walking distance everywhere. The city resembles many of the US cities with a downtown/city center with large sky-scrapers and malls. There were quite a few American-looking people walking around the city and I was told that they could be from the American army camp nearby. There were people from other nationalities too giving the city a cosmopolitan look.

The working class - taxi drivers, cleaners etc seem to comprise of Malayalis, Sri Lankans and Filipinos. The traffic on the roads was heavy most of the time and a few people appeared to break the rules (an Arab drove on a pavement).

The biggest downside for me though was the poor adoption of the Internet. The hotel where I stayed charged exorbitant rates for net access - QAR 2.25 per min! Wi-Fi appeared unheard of. The airport did have some basic connectivity. But India seems to be way ahead of Qatar in terms of providing Internet access.

The Corniche area in Doha is the most attractive part of the city where the seashore meets the land, the area is nicely curved with a beach for recreation(similar to Marine Drive in Mumbai). Unfortunately, I could not get any pictures of the area.

As mentioned earlier, my overall impression of the city was that it was a liveable place with expenses that one could manage.

A few pictures of the City Center Mall and the hotel I stayed are below.
