I have an ear for Punjabi folk from the time Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan lived. More recently, Rabbi Shergill’s Bulleh Shah has kept me enthralled for months. I also liked Kunal Ganjawala’s Channa Vey. Both very contrasting songs.
These days I am hooked to Mekal Hassan Band’s (from across the border) Waris Shah. For those who follow Hindi/Punjabi literature/movies, Waris Shah wrote Heer Ranjha - a classic Romeo Juliet like love story. As is the rumour with Romeo Juliet, Heer Ranjha is believed to have been inspired from Waris Shah’s own life. Mekal Hassan’s song sounds like a mix between folk and rock. One does not need to understand Punjabi to enjoy the song. Since the CD is not available in stores here, add a comment if you want me to send you the song.
