After observing people at offices for a while now, I thought that it would not hurt to postulate a law. The law of tea-drinking (tea is my favourite drink but it could be replaced it with any other beverage) and bantering states that:
At particular peaks in time, the number of people drinking tea (or other beverage) and bantering is more than or equal to the number of people sitting and working at their desks.
What this means?
This means that the productivity of an organization (or atleast that particular location) drops remarkably at those points in time. And loss of productivity means loss of revenue etc
What can be done?
- Identify the points in time when this happens. 11 AM and 3 PM are typical peak times in the location I work.
- Stop serving tea/beverage at those times! (Not recommended)
- Schedule meetings, 1:1 sessions or show up at their desks at 10.55 AM or 2.55 PM! (not recommended)
- Accept the fact that these are lean times and hope that the productivity picks up after those times :) (recommended)
